The farm Ginestre is an ancient grand-ducal farm situated in the province of Prato, in the municipality of Carmignano; this is a territory which, since the XVth century, in the wake of the Medicis, has witnessed the investment of the capital of many rich Florentine families in villas and estates.
It was, in fact, at the two farthest limits of the territory of Carmignano that they had created, at a distance of a century between them, the two singular villas of Poggio a Caiano and Artimino.
Within the farm estate, there are a number of farmhouses and also the Villa delle Ginestre which also once belonged to the Medicis; on these premises, it is possible to pass a few days holiday in direct contact with the countryside, at just a few kilometres distance away from Florence, Prato and Pistoia.
The produce of the farm includes wine, vin santo dessert wine and extra virgin olive oil, the historical products of Carmignanese agriculture which have made the name of Carmignano famous throughout the world. On the farm premises, it is possible to taste the wine, the oil and the vin santo of our own production.
You can find Carmignano in the hilly region of Montalbano rich in vines and olives, a beautiful countryside of gently sloping hills which preserves an atmosphere of calmness and serenity.
It is situated in a strategic position within the confines of the territory Pistoia, Florence and Prato, and their historical centres can be reached in a short time. Carmignano is interesting not only on account of the country scenery, but also due to the archaeological features which have been recovered in the reputed Etruscan zone; to the architecture represented by the Medici villas at Artimino and Poggio a Caiano; and to the church of San Michele, an ancient Franciscan monastery constructed in gothic style with an attractive cloister.
To this church a colonnade was added during the Renaissance era and it now houses pictures of rare beauty, the foremost of which is the splendid “Visitation” by Pontormo. The region around Carmignano has many businesses and farms producing a distinctive wine – the "brilliant Carmignano" as it has been defined for centuries by distinguished connoisseurs. Also the olive oil produced is of the highest quality.
Carmignano is the ideal place for those who love trekking and horse riding as it is possible to follow several different tracks in natural surroundings: these tracks run alongside a vineyard and an olive grove, passing by an an avenue of cypresses and emerging into a wood composed of Mediterranean vegetation.
How to get here :
To reach Carmignano, those arriving on the autostrada motorway from the north or south (A1) should take the Prato-Calenzano exit and proceed in the direction Indicatore- Poggio a Caiano. Arriving, however, from the west coast (A11), you should exit at Prato Ovest or Est and follow the directions for Poggio a Caiano and Seano.
Alternatively, for those arriving from Livorno (Leghorn), you should exit the superstrada dual carriageway at Lastra a Signa and proceed for Signa-Comeana. From the centre of the town of Carmignano, to arrive at the delle Ginestre farm, you should take the road for the Montalbano, in the direction of Vinci; after about 4 km, turn left following the directions for Verghereto and continue along the tarmac road.
