THE HISTORY
The house of the agriturismo I TRE ARCHI goes back to the end of 18th, beginning of the 19th Century. It had a smaller size at that time, there were only the stable and the cellar; upstairs there were the owners’ residence, the jam-seasoning room and a storehouse for olives before the crushing.
Afterwards the central part of the house had been built. At the beginning of the 20th Century the last part of the house has been built; the ground-floor served as dung-heap and the first floor was the hay-loft.
You can still notice the brick-made arches belonging to the old hay-loft and that give the Agriturismo its present name. The peasants who have lived here in the past centuries have always carried on an intense agricultural activity – that is why we want to resume and emphasize its primary identity.
Since the Etruscans time in this area people have always worked alabaster. Walking around you can notice sometimes white stones here and there: it is alabaster that turned into chalk. From this fact comes the name “I Gessi” that the place has kept for centuries.
THE HOUSE
In central position lies the house, whose most ancient part dates back to the 18th century.
It has been recently restored respecting the typical Tuscan style. Ceilings and floors have been made utilizing materials belonging to the older building.
The Agriturismo I Tre Archi lies in Pomarance, a village near Volterra.
The surrounding landscape is made of hills, houses, sheep, vineyards and olive yards. You will not see any big buildings that disturb the landscape. Sometimes the sunset in front of the swimming pool and the arcade creates really intense scenarios
