Borgo Il Melone dates back to the beginning of the 19th century when it was a property of the Mancinis, a noble family from Cortona who still owns the entire set of buildings.
The Mancini family boasts a wide family tree that includes Girolamo Mancini, scholar, man of letters and patriot who followed Garibaldi in 1860 and 1866.
He is the author of memorable biographies, such as "Life of Luca Signorelli", "Life of Lorenzo Valla", "Life of L.B. Alberti", and of dissertations such as "Cortona in the Middle Ages" and "Writes and Codices from Cortona".
He was Gonfalonier in Cortona; he was elected Member of the Parliament twice, and was Librarian and Lucumon of the Etruscan Academy. In 1881 he founded the bank 'Banca Popolare Cortona'.
The restructure
The original architectural features of the Borgo have remained essentially unchanged and they can still be recognized in the setup of the residential facilities.
The master's manor was surrounded by farmhouses where a variety of farming activities, typical of the Cortona area, were carried out every day.
"Casa della Seta" (House of Silk), "Casa del Frantoio" (House of the Windmill) and "Casa dell'Uva" (House of Grapes) are the names of the apartments, reminiscent of the main activities that were once carried out in each building.
Park
When you arrive at Borgo Il Melone, you will behold a vast stretch of bright green fields, with an area of almost 9 acres, partially covered by lively patches of flowers ranging from the deep red of rose beds to the delicate purple of lavender shrubs and the dark green of rosemary bushes spreading a lovely scent.
Our love for nature and our strong ties with the wonderful land where we live drove us to plant an orchard with 25 different types of fruit trees.
The air is alive with the perfume of lavender that we use to make the potpourri to decorate the interiors of the apartments. Borgo Il Melone is filled with the colors, perfumes and gifts of the luscious, authentic, lively and welcoming nature of our land.
Swimming Pool
A quiet reserved area of the Borgo is the location of the swimming pool, 65.6 by 32.8 feet long. Our state-of-the-art swimming pool is equipped with a relaxing whirlpool area and has showers and a changing room.
Plunge into its clear water, surrounded by the green hills that enclose it and enjoy superb serenity and relaxation. The swimming pool is open from May 15th to September 30th.
During all the summery period the Hosts will be able to taste light lunch in the terrace of the restaurant or to edge a swimming pool.
Church
The rich frescoes decorating the nave still preserve the brightness and intensity of the original colors made, according to ancient techniques, with a mixture of natural materials, such as lapis-lazuli powder and eggs.
The little inner church has always been the heart of the Borgo’s life. Religious ceremonies such as christenings and weddings are still celebrated today, upon request by our guests. It is the ideal location for intimate and exclusive ceremonies.
THE HOTEL
Our elegant and charming hotel has twelve wide double rooms equipped with private bathroom with bathtub and shower, minibar, satellite TV, hairdryer, air-conditioning, safe, telephone and ADSL. There 3 types of room:
Comfort rooms: the smallest type, with double bed and bathroom with shower or bathtub.
Deluxe rooms: the biggest type, with bathroom with shower and bathtub and panoramic view of the garden.
A place full of magic for a stylish and elegant, as well as extremely comfortable and relaxing, stay.
APPARTAMENT
Our eight spacious apartments are located where a little settlement once stood in the 19th century. The restoration of the set of buildings has been carried out with the uttermost respect for the original architectural features. The Borgo included a manor surrounded by a group of smaller farmhouses where the products of the land, such as oil, grapes, and wheat were collected and processed.
Original building materials have been cleverly restored and reused thus combining the typical atmosphere of a traditional agricultural settlement with state-of-the-art facilities suited to the needs of our times.
The types of apartment are the following:
TRILO: Casa del Giardiniere (Gardener's House) and Casa dello Stalliere (Groom's House)
TRILO SUPERIOR: Casa del Guardacaccia (Gamekeeper's House) and Casa dell'Olio (Olive-oil House)
COTTAGE: Casa del Frantoio (Oil -press House), Casa della Seta (Silk House) and Casa del Fattore (Bailiff's House)
COTTAGE DELUXE: Casa dell'Uva (Grapewine House)
IL RISTORANTE
The Borgo offers two different premises for those who wish to taste local food: a Restaurant and a Tavern-Wine Bar.
Designed to meet the different needs of our customers - be it an elegant and refined dinner to celebrate a special occasion or a light meal in a homely and cozy environment - the food selection of both premises boasts recipes that are colorful and tasty, prepared according to the local cooking tradition and seasoned with a touch of originality.
According to the season, you will have the chance to sample the different flavors of the land, complemented by a selection of wines from our cellar. If you wish to discover the secrets of our most traditional recipes, we can organize cookery courses on request. |
